You can also check out tabletop games from our 4 Color Fantasies sponsored demo library and from the LGBT Resource Center collection at no extra cost (photo ID required) or join one of the many gaming sessions that are happening all day long.

PRINCESS TEN TEN AND THE DARK SKIES: A New Musical

The creators of Princess Ten Ten, a gender non-conforming Princess, will speak at geekOUTucr, a free queer comic-con on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the University of California, Riverside. Chari Arespacochaga, Director of Creative Development for the Guardian Princesses, answers our questions about Princess Ten Ten.

Who is Princess Ten Ten?

Princess Ten Ten is one of the Guardian Princesses. She is Pan Asian and as she grows up, she tries to find who she truly is in the face of her kingdom’s traditions and expectations of a princess. In embracing who she is, she finds her voice and discovers that she is the Guardian of the Skies. She manages to save her kingdom from the fatal effects of air pollution.

Tell us more about the musical.

The musical is called PRINCESS TEN TEN AND THE DARK SKIES: A New Musical. In it we journey with Ten Ten as she does indeed find her voice and save our skies. This is an adaptation based on the storybook written by Prof. Setsu Shigematsu and the Guardian Princess Alliance. I am the musical’s creative director. Our book writer is Maggie Herskowitz and our composer is Jillie Mae Eddy.

How can people get involved with the Guardian Princesses project?

We have many ways for people to be involved with our projects.

If you are a UCR student, come apply to be an intern. We do a variety of fun, challenging, enriching community outreach and creative projects. You can also volunteer for he Guardian Ambassadors. Email us at guardianprincesses@gmail.com.

Roxane Gay, writer for the Marvel series Black Panther: World of Wakanda, will speak at geekOUTucr, a free queer comic-con on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the University of California, Riverside. ASL interpretation is provided. On the opening weekend for the Black Panther film, delve into the comic book backstory and the love between Ayo and Aneka.

Rae D. Magdon & Brianna Dym To Speak About Femslash Fanfic at geekOUTucr

Rae D. Magdon and Brianna Dym will present on "Enterprising Fans: How Femslash fans fill in the gaps mainstream media leaves behind" at at geekOUTucr on Saturday, February 17, 2018. ASL interpretation is provided. Rae D. Magdon will also be exhibiting at this free queer comic-con, and will be offering tips for fanfic writers at a separate writing workshop.

Rae D. Magdon is an author of queer and lesbian fiction. Her stories and transformative works celebrate lesbian, bisexual, queer, and trans women falling in love. In addition to ten original novels, she has an extensive fanfiction archive with over two hundred works. She is active in The 100, Mass Effect, Legend of Korra, and Wynonna Earp fandoms. Brianna Dym (Information Science PhD Student) has a background in English and sociolinguistics, with a masters degree from the University of Alaska. She got her start in researching online communities and their digital literacy practices, and is now looking to norms in online communities and ways in which different minority groups carve out spaces for themselves online. She is currently researching gaming communities and Archive of Our Own, and is also interested in different ways in which users push back against hegemonic structures in technology. Josh Trujillo & Mister Loki Explore Queer Comics History at geekOUTucr

Writer Josh Trujillo and artist Mister Loki, two Southern California creators making their mark in the comics community, will present on the History of Queer Comics at geekOUTucr on Saturday, February 17, 2018. ASL interpretation is provided. They will also be exhibiting at this free queer comic-con.

Josh Trujillo is the writer and creator of LOVE MACHINES, DEATH SAVES, and DECLARATION. He writes about history, humor, romance, and gaming. Trujillo's work is featured in the 2017 Eisner-winning LOVE IS LOVE. By day he writes for Telltale Games, on titles like MARVEL'S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Visit joshtrujillo.com and @LostHisKeysMan

Mister Loki is an API queer comics artist who works part time as a pediatric bone marrow transplant nurse. His work focuses on increasing queer and racial representation in fantasy. Gabby Rivera, writer for Marvel's America Chavez superhero, to speak at geekOUTucr

Gabby Rivera, writer of the Marvel series America — featuring the first queer, Latinx teen-girl superhero, ever — will speak at geekOUTucr, a free queer comic-con on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the University of California, Riverside. ASL interpretation is provided.

Gabby Rivera is a young, charming speaker dedicated to empowering women and improving our marginalized communities. She’s currently making major waves for her Marvel series starring America Chavez: a queer, Latinx superhero who’s been written and designed, crucially, by a queer Latinx. And while the series is “definitely going to tackle America’s ancestry and ethnicity,” Rivera tells The Washington Post, it’s also a comic book aimed at wide appeal: committed to snappy one-liners, blowing stuff up, and beating up the bad guys, naturally. Tee Franklin, creator of Bingo Love, to speak at geekOUTucr

 

Tee Franklin, whose graphic novella Bingo Love will be published by Image Comics on Valentine's Day 2018, will speak at geekOUTucr, UC Riverside's free queer comic-con on Saturday, February 17, 2018. ASL interpretation is provided.

Tee Franklin is a Queer disabled Black woman who writes comics: The Outfit (Nailbiter #27), A Blazin' (in the Ignatz award winning Elements Anthology), Tears (in the Eisner-winning and New York Times Best Selling Love is Love), and the Queer romance graphic novella, Bingo Love.

Franklin won the 2017 Queer Press Grant for Bingo Love and raised almost $60k for this graphic novella via Kickstarter. Franklin created her own publishing company, Inclusive Press, in order to publish her own comics, as well as comics by other marginalized creators. Franklin fights for inclusion in comics, no matter the risks, as she hopes that the next generation of marginalized comic creators won't have to put up with what's been happening for the past 75+ years.
